How the Clear Channel Grinch Stole My Christmas Music

Unbelievably stupid. Why would a radio station known city-wide for their non-stop Christmas music late November and throughout December every year be switched to a different non-Christmas music format exactly 1 week before Christmas Day?

Lite 94.9 FM, a station with the same format for the last 15+ years, suddenly made the swap to COUNTRY???? music this past Sunday. Seriously, I listen to this station only one time during the year - Christmas - and I'm sure I'm not alone in that regard. The music the rest of the year is an unbearable mix of Michael Bolton, Rod Stewart and similar. Only at Christmas do they manage to attract such a sizable listening audience.

Nat King Cole. Carpenters. Even the ridiculous sounds of Mannheim Steamroller are acceptable listening during Christmas time. This station had it right. Now, they are called "The Bull" or something like that. Ha - lame!

Soooooo...anyway, the million dollar question is this: why not wait til the day after Christmas to switch formats? Maybe they figured if they were going to convert an audience they needed to do it when they knew people were listening, maybe they just didn't care. Still, when your money comes from advertisers as it does in radio, you need an audience. Is a country station going to draw more of an audience than easy listening - or Christmas music during CHRISTMAS? Pop quiz...you're in a doctor's/dentist's office either waiting for your appointment or getting worked on. Do you hear easy listening on the speakers or do you hear country music?

Anyway, that's my rant. There are two other stations in Atlanta that play Christmas music this time of year...104.7 The Fish and B98.5. The Fish plays too much new stuff (well, really just the same old songs poorly "remixed" by otherwise good Christian rock bands) and B98.5 doesn't play nearly enough of the old-old-old stuff (Bing, Nat, etc). I've got a sizeable MP3 collection of songs, that'll have to pull me through.

Thanks Clear Channel! First 96 Rock and the Regular Guys, now Christmas. Bah-humbug.

Outside of that, looks to be a fun Christmas this year. Family in town, wassail, cookies and new socks. Shazzaam!

Fall Fun

Fall isn't exactly my favorite season. Summer is, and I'll take the blazing heat of a Georgia summer over the other seasons combined. With that said, the fall season may be a solid runner up. First of all, there's the football season. I'm mostly a college football guy, but the NFL can be enjoyable. Primarily, it's the fun of actually going over to Athens to see my Dawgs play on Saturdays, or travelling down to Jacksonville, FL for the GA/FL game. At the very least, it's fun to get together with some folks and watch the away games on TV.

There's also a lot of other activity. For all the various festivals and events that go on during the fall months, I can't seem to find too many weekends just staying at home. But it's great...going out and seeing all the people and the colors changing all over the place. Of course, this year fall is turning out to be quite busy for TradeWind business, but the personal/business balance is working out alright.

Past weekends so far have brought a few UGA games, some weekend work, going to the Duluth Fall Festival and seeing family. In particular, my Dad has been off his feet the last month due to complications related to a kidney stone surgery. I haven't been to visit nearly as much as I'd like. He's out of the hospital now for the last week (or two weeks I think) and that's a little more to his liking at least. UGA games haven't been quite as fun without dear ol' Dad though. It was always nice to have that common ground between us, and I'd argue no one in our family understands the emotional rollercoaster that is UGA football nearly as well as my Dad and I do. However, I think he's going to still make the GA/FL trip this year, but probably won't be making it to the game....probably no big deal since WE USUALLY LOSE. But I digress...

Oktoberfest is on tap for this weekend! Woo! Slightly larger group going this year (hahaha...1 more person). And this year, we're getting a cab from our campground into Helen and back. Picking a DD (Andy) last year was no fun for anybody. So, just in time for it to be my turn to DD, we're making sure we get the cabbie. Speaking of Oktoberfest, I probably need to finish packing the gear up...

I reheated some leftover bacon from Sunday in the plastic baggie it was in and had to spend about 10 minutes peeling the "wrapper" off of my bacon this morning. I guess that's why I usually have cereal.

Already got stuff on the list for TradeWind as late as July of next year. Awesome.

Hiring lots of new people at my office lately. When the resumes come in, half the battle is just sorting out those who actually read the job posting and those who clearly did not. Also, there are the ones WITHOUT the requisite resume but with cover letters that begin "I am absolutely the most qualified applicant for the position you are filling. Please respond with some information about the position." I'm dead serious...first, they are CERTAIN that no one else is going to be a better match without 1) knowing any of the other applicants or 2) having a real idea what the position is, while still assuring me that they are the best of whatever we want. I understand being self-promoting and all that, but when I respond to some of these people reminding them that we need a resume, you would think we were asking for their checking account numbers. "No, I'll submit my resume when I have more information about the position." But aren't you already qualified? Isn't the job description really just a description of you, after all? Hahaha, really though, I just say "thank you" and more or less tell them to keep looking and good luck, all that stuff. I can't wait to finish this hiring cycle.

And then there's the new camera. Just picked up the Panasonic DVX100B a few weeks ago. It's a great shot, and it will be nice to no longer need to rent the equipment from everybody. I picked up a nice new fluid head and tripod while I was at it. The best part is that it's all paid for now. Business has been good this year and it was about time I got this stuff anyway. I'll probably be posting something about it soon over at my digital media blog, so check there in a while and read all about it if you like.

That's all for now. I'll probably wait another two months before I post anything again.

Trabajo

Continuing the pseudo-political rantings....

Today I did one of those jobs I don't want to do (or that I'm not willing to do). In fact, it's a job that no American citizens want to do or are willing to do. I spread some pinestraw on my landscaping. In fact, I did it for less than minimum wage. It was hot outside, too (and at only 7:30am).

I made my clothes all dirty, cut my hands (even with gloves on, I guess I'm kinda clumsy), got pinestraw where it ought not be and ruined the time I was planning on surfing the web. Would I do it again? Yep, willingly in fact. Although next time I might pay myself minimum wage.

Looks good though, so I'm obviously now a skilled laborer in such a regard. And it wasn't all that hard really, just time-consuming. So I guess I'm doing my part to fight illegal immigration. Who knew the frontline of battle was in my own backyard?

Maybe next I'll try painting my own house (okay...no).

Had a good weekend, got to see a bunch of old friends and aquaintences at a wedding. The wedding was spectacular really. My friend Loren married her guy Matt down in Your Favorite Town. Her family hired my company to do the wedding videography for the ceremony. It was a lot of fun and I couldn't be happier for Matt and Loren. Woo!

Working on a couple of beauty pagent projects right now, scheduled at the end of August and beginning of September. All being held at the Mall of Georgia, so that's convenient. Trying to get the whole crew together, which may prove difficult. I'm taking producer and editor roles only on this one. We'll see how it goes!

And I'm on Facebook now, which took me long enough. For a while there, I didn't have a *.edu e-mail address, but UGA started offering alumni e-mail accounts, so I'm all set on that now. That will soak up some spare time I bet.

Everyone have a good week!

"Electronic voting machines are a threat to our democracy." - Rep. Cynthia McKinney

I actually laughed...it's 6:30am and I'm laughing at the TV. This lady is such a joke, and she's on the way out.

Threat to our democracy? Hi, I'm the US Constitution...just thought you'd want to know that we aren't a democracy, we're a republic. But then, you probably didn't care. Hey, maybe you didn't know there was a difference! No problem, I get that all the time.

We have bigger threats....federal taxes for one. But wait, you're in favor of that one! And you want to raise taxes on my wife and on me because we're considered "rich" by the tax code. How 'bout them apples!

How about terrorism? Well, that is sort of an old topic, probably nothing new to add to that. So....let's nail it to the voting machines.

There's a Saturday Night Live skit where that dude from Law & Order is doing an insurance commercial and he's trying to get old people freaked out about robot attacks on elderly people - hilarious. Okay, so that's EXACTLY what it sounds like when someone calls electronic voting machines a threat.

The only people who ever talk about the shortcomings of the voting machines are the losers. It's like football...the losing team always talks about all the mistakes the referees made. Call it a heightened sense of awareness, or a true sense of concern. Facts are facts, losers love crying "foul" when it starts to look like things aren't going their way.

If there was any compelling evidence that our nation will fall to pieces because of electronic voting machines I'd love to hear it. Is it possible that the machines are manufactured in Hell and the votes tallied by Satan himself?

Wow, life has absolutely improved for me since the last post. My wife has gotten more beautiful, weather has gotten more bearable (I like it nice and hot), business has picked up significantly....just grand. No complaints.

I had my first back-to-back weekend for TradeWind Productions in late May. I had a day+night of shooting for a wedding on Saturday May 21st and an early afternoon shooting a baton twirling recital on Sunday the 22nd. I wasn't sure what to really do about it at first...hire out the help and stay behind the scenes? Commit to both and hope for the best? I chose the latter. Ended up buying some new equipment shortly beforehand....since you're likely not interested in everything I bought, I won't bore you with the details here. Now, buying new equipment right before mission critical work is usually a bad idea (especially if the shoot depends upon the success/failure of the new equipment...which it kind of did).

So how did it work out? Great...the wedding was outdoors and the weather was nice. As an added bonus, the wedding was held just a few miles from my house. It was a friend that I hired a few years ago at my day job, and he is also good friends with my buddy Andy. Andy would have shot the wedding himself except that he was attending as a guest and his wife Abby would have shot him if she had to fly solo. No matter, as I paid him a good commission for the job (that's right, sell my work and you get paid to do nothing, cool huh?).

The baton event went off very well. It was a quick turnaround job so I'm done with it and it's all shipped off now. Made quite a few sales at the event, plus about an equal number of pre-sales. Everyone was very nice and the person who owns the baton studio was great to work with (she was also endlessly grateful to me, as I didn't charge for the shoot, only for the sales). Should be some good word-of-mouth advertising off this event.

More business in the pipeline for TradeWind this year, plus finishing off a few projects in the can...I'll be busy. Working in the new office downstairs now. Just finished up the work on the french doors and got a good deal on some additional office furniture...it's definitely a much nicer working environment.

The 3rd anniversary is coming up for Hilary and I, and we celebrated this past weekend (the actual anniversary is this Wednesday the 21st). Between work and all, this weekend was just the best time to do the celebrating. We had a good time together, though it hardly seems like 3 years of marriage. And as I said earlier, Hilary has only gotten more beautiful with time (I'm hardly playing to the wife here, as she usually has better things to do than read my blog...although, just in case she is reading this: HILARY YOU'RE SO HOT!). Honestly, I couldn't have found a better wife than Hilary, even if I lived 300 years. Awesome.

Next weekend we leave for a week at the beach with my ever-expanding family. 20 folks packing into 4 condos at St. Simon's Island for our annual family vacation. We didn't get to go last year because of various things, so we're all the more ready to hit the beach this summer. Always a lot of fun!

This week at work is the culmination of 6 months of development and planning for a bunch of new stuff. I'd be more specific but I can't...it's just a long, long road, and it only got harder after one of my coworkers left and I had to take on more work (although promotions are not all that bad of a thing). Still, everything starts being built out this week and we'll see where the holes are in the logic and planning very quickly. Notice "where" the holes are, not "if there are any holes." I'm quite confident of my work, but I'm not stupid enough to think it's perfect.

I have no idea how anybody ever finds time to have kids...that has got to be the biggest longshot right now. So, people in the family who are pooling money on who has kids next, this is your insider tip: IT'S NOT US.

I've been wrong before.

Kind of an older article, but still relevent. Remember the comic book that the Mexican government created to help Mexicans sneak into the United States? Well, if you don't that's okay...this English translation will explain it all for you:

http://www.qando.net/details.aspx?Entry=789
(scroll down a bit to see the fun pictures Mexico created)

Basically, if you are a Mexican coming to the US illegally, don't beat women or have loud salsa parties, or The Man will come knockin'.

Today the speed limit dropped from 65 mph to 55 mph on an 8 mile stretch of my commute. Not a big deal...it's being done to get ready for the remainder of the construction on this new mega-interchange between I-85 and GA 316. Gonna last for another 2 and 1/2 years. After it's all done the traffic congestion in the area "should" lighten up a bit.

Okay, so not being one to spit on the traffic laws, no matter how ridiculous something may seem, I followed the new limit in the next-to-far-right lane of a 5 lane road (well, actually I was going 5 over the limit at 60 mph). Holy smokes, horns honking, tempers flaring, fingers waving and screaming screaming SCREAMING. People were SO PISSED OFF at this little Toyota Econo-car driving down the road at 60 mph. One of two things (or both, or whatever) had obviously occurred:

  • People were not aware of the new speed limit, and could not figure out why I was poking along
  • People didn't give a damn about the speed limit, whether it was 40 mph or 70 mph...they were sure as rain gonna go however fast they wanted.

Regardless, I wasn't going to speed up just to satisfy these unknowns. Tickets in this zone can cost up to $2,000........yes, $2,000. I just don't have it. That's about my only motivation to ever obey a speed limit...money. Let's face it, almost all speed limits are set partially due to road and traffic conditions, but primarily to raise funds for the local municipalities.

Anyway, I didn't feel too bad about all these jokers getting angry at me....let 'em fly by and take their chances. I saw at least a dozen po-po flashing their lights off the side of the road all the way in today. I ain't buyin' their coffee and donuts. I was scared as hell to have no less than 4 tractor trailers riding my rear at that speed, but I couldn't very well get over another lane without exiting. Too bad for all of us to have to slow down for 2 and 1/2 years, but oh well....deal with it.

Bah....what a dumb way to start off the week. Now I'm ready to get back in bed.

Here's a link to an interesting post about illegal immigrants. Written by a guy here in Gwinnett County.

Would be interesting to hear what some of you think about this post and all of this other illegal immigration stuff.

If the shelving in your closet falls down, you have three options:
1) Just leave it alone, hang your clothes somewhere else in the house
2) Move to a new house
3) Repair the shelving

I will be totally honest, number 2 just might be the best option, with number 1 a close second. Number 3 is a last resort. If you've never had to replace this kind of shelving, you don't know how good your life is. It seems like a simple enough design, but also, it has fun perks. I will be keeping this information to myself, however, as that time may come when your shelving falls off the wall and you too must make a decision, and it will just be so much more fun for you to figure it out by yourself.

I think this shelving must have been installed by a midget because all of the anchors were pointed up into the wall, like a short person hammered them in.

Oh, and even more exciting was that the shelving was a custom size, so that was nice too.

Repeat customers are the best...you've already established yourself, they know how to work with you, so you can just cut straight to business and get the job done. Even better, when someone comes back for more business, you feel good knowing that they really did like your previous work.

Much work remains to be done before we can announce our total failure to make any progress.

I've been away for a little while, working on a handful of different things. One of which is having some fun and getting up to speed with the most recent revision of Adobe's video production software bundle, recently renamed Production Studio.

I'm already beginning to detail my experiences with it on my production blog, Full Resolution. As such, I won't bore you with all the details here. It's pretty immense, with Illustrator being thrown in as an additional software in the bundle now and all kinds of new possibilities. Keep tabs on the production blog if you would like to know more.

Well, in the past month, buddy Mike has taken off to a land far, far away (Oklahoma), Sir Eric has shot some horses (with a video camera) and my yard has exploded with all kinds of spring crap....weeds, grass and the occassional flower.

We're doing some spring cleaning here as well, having just painted one of the bathrooms and some of the trim downstairs. Meanwhile, we are waiting for an install of some french doors on the main floor between the foyer and the sitting room - which will become my office when all is said and done.

Cynthia McKinney looks absolutely crazy. She's got permanent bedhead. She's got the crazy smile now, too. I think it may be the same smile she's always had, but now it looks crazy because she uses it right after she says crazy things. Not that any of this has anything to do with whether she is good at what she does for a living....still, crazy.

Uh oh, ran out of coffee.....gonna have to move on with the day soon.

Jingles is going bonkers out in the yard the last few weeks. She has a little squeaky ball that we keep out in the yard to throw around and what not. The funniest thing though....all these birds out in the trees building nests are talking to each other, tweeting back in forth. Now, when Jingles hears that, she goes and finds her squeaky ball, runs up to the base of the tree and starts squeaking it at them. I am SO SERIOUS. If a bird flies by overhead, she runs for the ball and starts running around looking up in the air and squeaking the ball. She's trying desperately to talk to those birds. I don't have the heart to tell her that the birds around here are mostly robins, and the squeaky ball is more of a cardinal call.

Here comes Tuesday!

Wanted to jump on here real quickly and send a birfday shoutout to my boy Mike!

You'll hear me mention him from time to time, he's the SCAP trumpet player (1 of 2, collect them all, while supplies last) and usually helps me keep my head on straight in regards to all my website stuff and other computer/tech related things.

Good guy, turning 47 years old today....er, 32. Wait, make that 14. Bah, I think he'll sit fine at 24, but you know what they say, you're only as old as you feel (which makes me, um yeah, about 17).

Leave him the good words down in the comments!!!!!

I'm sure I've missed other peep's birfdays lately, so if I did, slap me in the face next time you see me. I'll assume that's the reason.

1.24.2006

Here's some news...I received a call from Digital Media Online the other day. One of their websites, www.DMNForums.com, hosts worldwide user groups for digital media professionals. I have been very active for the last couple of years in the user forums, asking questions that I have and answering posts for others.

Long story short, my name was up for a hosting position on several of the Adobe product forums. I agreed to host, submitted a bio and picture, and as of a few days ago I am now a forum host for 4 of their forums: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
Premiere Pro, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Encore DVD.

I still post and answer posts like always, but now I will be involved more closely with the forums I host for things like monitoring posts for language, blatant advertising, or off-topic conversations. None of those things are ever an issue really, folks on these boards are professionals for the most part and things stay very professional. The only time it gets out of hand is when people start talking about Mac computers versus PCs....lots of opinion there, things get heated.

I'll also be able to post tutorials, write editorials and work my way into the hearts of millions....or something like that. Should be a lot of fun, I enjoy keeping up with all of this stuff.

1.19.2006

Welcome back...

Long time no post....Mike has been doing some work on the servers and updating junk. As you probably noticed, the blog is no longer hosted locally on my webpage....it's hosted by Blogger's own Blogspot. The look and feel doesn't really change at all once you get here, but the way you get here has changed. This is probably permanent, so if you like you may bookmark http://ChristianJolly.blogspot.com to bring you directly here in the future.

Since I was putting so much work into rearranging the layout stuff, I decided to finally start another blog (as you may ALSO have noticed on your way here). This blog will be on digital media topics and is located at http://FullResolution.blogspot.com. Some folks just want to come here and read what's going on in my personal life, and so I've stripped the technical A/V conversations from here and will be doing them at Full Resolution blog instead....and it will be better for both blogs.

No more time for posting now, but I promise I'll come back with more fun junk soon.
